"COLOMBIA ASCENDS RANKINGS WITH 4-2 WIN"

James H. Sipila - League Writer

Windemere Field: Under both sunny and overcast conditions it was Taxandria paying a visit to Colombia in WOSL Third Division action.

Coming into this game both teams were sporting 1 & 1 records, Colombia coming off a 2-1 loss to Petrolia, and Taxandria coming off a 2-0 loss to AEK a week earlier.  It would be interesting to see what team was more driven to succeed this early in regular season play.  During warm-up exercises it was readily apparent that Taxandria had a significant advantage in overall size if not strength.  On the other had it could be seen that the Colombia squad was was quick, worked and communicated well together, and enjoyed excellent ball handling abilities.

Only the next 90 minutes could tell the tale as to which team had developed the better formula.  In the early going the ball moved efficiently up and down through the midfield areas, with both teams mounting numerous offensive thrusts in an effort to score.  Columbia midfielders rapidly sent passes up to their awaiting forwards who worked hard to get the step on their defensive counterparts.  In return Taxandria worked the ball forcefully up field where their forwards used their size and strength to challenge Colombia defenders, who often had to sacrifice the body in order to make effective tackles.

The Colombia defenders had excellent speed, but sometimes had difficulty in clearing the ball effectively and directly up to the centre field area.  It was only 6 minutes in when Colombia's # 9, Juan David, posted a marker with a relatively slow but well-placed curving shot taken from the right side near the box margin that eluded the Taxandria keeper's fingertips and found the bottom-left corner of the mesh.  Taxandria followed with a near miss at the other end of the field, nearly capitalizing on a major defensive miscue made by Colombia defenders at 10 minutes.  Twelve minutes later Taxandria managed to tie the game with another soft but well-placed shot taken along the ground from the left side that rolled into the bottom-right corner of the Colombia goal.  This goal was scored by Taxandria's # 10, Nathan Talsma at 22 minutes.  Both teams continued to work the ball well into their corresponding offensive zones throughout the remainder of the half, and play was rarely bogged down in the midfield and featured few whistles.  The first 45 minutes ended in a 1-1 tie.

As is usually the case in WOSL play, both teams came out with renewed determination and intensity in the second half.  The nature of the offensive matchups at either end of the field, and both team's ability to move the ball quickly up to their awaiting strikers made this game a pleasure to watch.  Up to this point both goalkeepers put on a fair show of skill and leadership as well.  At 50 minutes however, Colombia earned a free kick just to the right and outside the Taxandria box.  Although the defenders in white appeared to be lined up and well-positioned to block any direct scoring attempt, Colombia's # 17, Daniel Barreto made an excellent kick and placed a slightly curving, accurate shot into the top left corner of the mesh that gave the keeper little chance.  The Colombia bench erupted into jubilation but it would not end there.  Only four minutes later they would strike again, effectively penetrating Taxandria defenses with a brisk header taken by # 9, Juan David, finding its way into the bottom right corner of the Taxandria goal.

Play became slightly rougher after this point, and Taxandria was perhaps dissatisfied with being down by two this early in the half.  It was only five minutes later however, at 59 minutes that Colombia connected again.  Busting through the Taxandria defense this time it was Colombia's #20, Hiromu, with another well placed shot taken from about 15 yards out.  At this point the score was 4-1, and Taxandria team continued to voice their displeasure with the status of the game and kept applying pressure the best they could.  Late in the half they would eventually solve the Colombian riddle with a quick header taken out in front of the right side of the Colombia goal by # 9, Jeff Soetemans, which originated from an excellent long-distance throw-in taken from the far side of the field.  At this point it was 4-2 and that is how the game would end.  Throughout the remainder of the game Colombia stalled the play by forcing the ball out of bounds on every available occasion, thereby negating the oncoming offensive threat.  JHS
