"WHITE EAGLES WIN AT HOME"

Nilestown: Under warm and breezy conditions it was Portuguese visiting the White Eagles in WOSL Premier Division play.

The White Eagles earned their first win of the regular season at home over Portuguese in a match that could have easily went either way.  In the first portion of the game the ball was moved quickly up and down through the midfield by either team with little offensive threat mustered by either side.  As the half wore on however it was the Portuguese that began taking it to the home squad with a number of fine chances that had the White Eagles defenders truly on the defensive.

At 13 minutes it was Portuguese's # 16 Davie MacPherson outpacing and dribbling past at least two defenders on his way towards the goalmouth coming in from the left side.  He made no mistake with a well-placed rolling shot that found the bottom left corner of the net that put his team up 1-0.  The intensity of play increased noticeably after this point but one could see that although the White Eagles were fairly successful in making tackles and then working the ball upfield, they somehow couldn't effectively feed their strikers in order to generate offensive opportunities.

At the other end of the field Portuguese were more successful in that regard, as they generated several good chances on net through the bulk of the half.  In a rare burst of offensive playmaking that broke into the Portuguese box however, it was the White Eagles' # 12 Tom Galazka earning a penalty shot at 38 minutes while driving in from the left side.  He made no mistake in converting with a quick kick into the bottom left corner of the mesh that tied the game at one apiece.  After this point the White Eagles perhaps began to regain their confidence as they worked diligently to turn the tide of the game in their favour.

With the opening of the second half the home club came out with renewed vigour and determination.  They likely knew that they were very lucky to have weathered the first half and to have kept the scoresheet even.  The White Eagles demonstrated an increased level of confidence versus their play in the first half and began to effectively feed their strikers the ball.  The White Eagles' defense also seemed to have strengthened subsequent to the break and their time of possession was noticeably on the increase.  Portuguese in turn stuck to their plan and played a style similar to that of the first half, however they simply were not as effective in a majority of one-on-one contests.

At the 75 minute mark it was the White Eagles' # 10 Robert Pereira scoring off a fine header he received from an accurately placed free kick taken from the left side about 30 metres out.  Suddenly the White Eagles had regained control and their team was up 2-1.  Fairly intense back and forth play ensued after this point with either side making strong efforts at shutting down the opposition's hungry strikers.  In the final moments Portuguese came close with a header made off an excellent corner kick that deflected harmlessly off the centre of the crossbar.  Seconds later the final whistle was blown, and the three points, on this occasion, were awarded to the White Eagles.  JHS
